Daniel Kantor, Principal/Creative Director
Daniel Kantor founded Kantor Group in 1995 after honing his brand strategy experience on the client side. Having worked inside a number of high-tech companies, Kantor learned early on that complex products are best sold through simplified yet potent brand messaging.
As Director of Marketing for Coda Music Software (now known as Make Music), Kantor was the brand marketing vision behind the development, naming and launch of Finale, a music publishing software platform that became an instant hit, and the world standard.
Kantor also held the position of Corporate Brand and Investor Relations Communications Director for Orthomet, a publicly traded medical device company. Kantor’s extensive experience in the med-tech arena further advanced his elemental brand management instincts. Numerous medical device companies have consulted with Kantor Group on their brand strategies, including Medtronic, 3M, CVRx, Orthomet, SpineTech, Spineology, Avanta Orthopedics, Wright Medical, Ascension, Exos, Everest Medical, and Mardil Medical.
Though Kantor Group’s clientele is primarily corporate, Kantor has consulted on many high-profile projects with clients in the religion sector. His work with religious brands inspired his latest book, Graphic Design and Religion, published in 2007 by GIA.
As a musician and composer, Kantor is primarily known for his popular Christmas choral work, Night of Silence. Since it was first published, Night of Silence has become the publisher’s biggest selling Christmas work. This piece has been broadcast worldwide on PBS and NPR, and performed and recorded by the some of the world’s finest choral groups, orchestras, ensembles and singers.
Crossword Puzzle Constructor
Kantor also occasionally constructs crossword puzzles for The New York Times, an interest that was ignited after seeing the movie WordPlay. "You’d be surprised how many taglines and brand names I’ve developed over the years that were informed by having this skill," says Kantor. "To get anything published, whether it’s music or a crossword, it must be playful, conceptually clear, relevant and perfectly edited. What could be a better complement to copywriting?"
When he’s not working, you can usually find Dan on his road bike, at the piano, or enjoying some great food with his wife Sara at Broder's, or King's, or Wise Acre, or Cafe Maude, or InSeason, or Heidi's, or Tilia, or Lola, or Cave Vin...
Kantor received a B.A. from the College of St. Thomas, St. Paul, MN. Graduate studies include participation in the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies program at Hamline University, St. Paul, MN. Kantor is also a certified FastTrac instructor. He has taught and lectured in the Entrepreneurial Studies program at the University of St. Thomas, Graduate School of Business.
